Through McNeill's passage, he looks at early society and develops an understanding of the pre industrial life style. McNeill explains a couple historical events that shaped societies and their living into different cultures. McNeill goes into explaining how many different societies and states started to interact together with the lack of present day technology that we used today. He divided thees interactions into three categories: conquest, enslavement, and trade. As a result, a sense of nationalism came from these outside factors and the urge for one's change had begun. These new added attractions and influences though did not take liking to every one. Many people were questioning if these were the right things to do and became very concerned with the new way of living. This effected not only the kingdoms but each state as well. New state lines were drawn and a new world change had begun.
I found this entire article quite intersting. Many way we look at the world today is the result in the preindustrial way of life and how it literally shaped our world that we live in today. I mean most people today have no idea how exactly each country obtained it's shape or how here in the United States each state has their borders along with their own shape. It would be really intersting to go back to the time period when their was no states and no borders to observe how this country looked or how the people interacted with one another. I also look at this idea that McNeill brought up and realized that hostile territorial battles are still taking place today. for example, all over the Middle East. Many of those countries are still fighting over what land is theirs and who should live where. So to me thsi whole globalized world and interaction between different cultures still have negative effects towards people today.
I don't really have any questions coming from this article, but I do find myself questioning some things. With all of these immigrants and different cultures coming together and living amongst each other, is it possible for conflict not to exsist. I mean to me, too much of this globalization and immigration into new countries have brought much success to each country but it also brought many negative aspects along with it.
I think globalization was inevitable. So despite the negative aspects that have come with it, I don't think there was any way to stop or even prepare for it. Though I do agree that globalization has brought its benefits and consequences. As McNeill reminded us, the sailors who brought commodities from port to port were constantly bringing disease with them along with the prized goods! It's still like that today, we're still hearing about cabbage from mexico or banana's from brazil arriving in the US with E. Coli or other parasitic dangers among them.
