The book Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom was a very entertaining science fiction story and really blew my mind. This book simply explains the world in the 22nd century known to Doctorow as a "Bichun Society". This means that the dominant society on earth will be totally obsolete one day due to all of the new technology and body enhancements. Human beings in this society are no longer human but almost robotic. They no longer have to worry about death, material goods are no longer scarce, and everyone is able to purchase what once were thought of as luxuries. But the best part is there is no more money, it is replaced by "whuffies" which is reputation and measures how much esteem and respect other people have for you. This entire system replaces money and determines who will get scarce items. Also in this new world, corporations are no longer in existent. They are replaced by "Adhocracy" organizations which is the opposite of a bureacracy.
The setting of this book though is what was so interesting to me. It is taking place in the 22nd century in Walt Disney World in Florida. But in this time period it is no longer run by a corporation, instead by adhocracies and the parks visitors are competing for whuffies. This then lead to the main part of this story where a huge dilemma is taking place between a couple high tech crews. They are all competing for rides at the park and some are trying to stop certain rides from being replaced. Eventually after all of these organization compete, some seize to exists anymore while others still remain.
Overall I found this story to be quite imoressive. Cory Doctorow really knows how to make the reder think and it is behond me how he can come up with a story like this one. I suggest that people take time to actually read this book because I myslef found it very funny, entertaining and it really took my mind for lupe.
I am glad you enjoyed this extra reading option! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
